Numerical Order Ordinal & Cardinal Numbers

Cardinal numbers show quantity (one, two, three…). Ordinal numbers show position or order (first, second, third…).

Ordinal numbers: first (1st), second (2nd), third (3rd), fourth (4th) … eleventh (11th), twenty-first (21st), etc.
Cardinal numbers: one (1), two (2), three (3), four (4) … eleven (11), twenty-one (21), etc.

Two ways to identify something by number:

StructureExample
The + ordinal + nounthe first day, the second block, the third floor
Noun + cardinalday one, block two, floor three
The + Ordinal + NounNoun + Cardinal
the first dayday one
the second blockblock two
the third floorfloor three
the fourth bookbook four
the fifth monthmonth five
the sixth callcall six
Example 1: Book four was the first book I studied.
Example 2: Our flight leaves from Gate 12, not Gate 2. → Our flight leaves from Gate twelve, not Gate two.
Example 3: This is the third time I’ve read this chapter. → It’s Chapter six, and I’ve read it three times.
Example 4: She lives on the fifth floor. → Her apartment is on Floor five.
Quick trick
If the number comes after “the” and before the noun, use the ordinal form (the fifth chapter).
If the number comes right after the noun, with no “the”, use the cardinal form (Chapter five).
Watch the spelling: five → fifth, nine → ninth, twelve → twelfth, twenty → twentieth.
