Personal Pronouns Practice Test
30 questions · 100 bankPersonal Pronouns Subject, Object, Reflexive & Possessive
Personal pronouns replace nouns so we don’t have to repeat them. English has four types: subject, object, reflexive, and possessive pronouns.
Subject pronouns replace the subject of a sentence: Alice cooks very well. → She cooks very well.
Object pronouns replace the object of a sentence: Louis will fix the bicycle. → Louis will fix it.
| Subject Pronouns | Object Pronouns | |
|---|---|---|
| I | verb | me |
| you | you | |
| he | him | |
| she | her | |
| it | it | |
| we | us | |
| you | you | |
| they | them |
Reflexive pronouns are used as the object of a verb or preposition when it refers back to the same subject of the sentence: Jim hurt himself while he was playing.
Caution: we do not use reflexive pronouns after the verbs concentrate, feel, meet, and relax. Incorrect: “You should concentrate yourself.” Correct: “You should concentrate.”
| Subject Pronouns | Reflexive Pronouns | |
|---|---|---|
| I | verb | myself |
| you | yourself | |
| he | himself | |
| she | herself | |
| it | itself | |
| we | ourselves | |
| you | yourselves | |
| they | themselves |
Possessive adjectives come before a noun and agree with the possessor: Susan is doing Susan’s homework. → Susan is doing her homework.
Possessive pronouns stand alone, with no noun after them: This is Jonathan’s book and that is Alice’s book. → This is his and that is hers.
| Subject Pronoun | Possessive Adjective | Possessive Pronoun |
|---|---|---|
| I | my | mine |
| you | your | yours |
| he | his | his |
| she | her | hers |
| it | its | its |
| we | our | ours |
| you | your | yours |
| they | their | theirs |
Subject pronouns come before the verb; object pronouns come after it.
Reflexive pronouns are only used when the subject and the object are the same person or thing.
Possessive adjectives always need a noun after them; possessive pronouns never do.
