There + Be Talking About Existence

There + Be is used to talk about the existence of something. The verb be agrees with the noun that follows it, not with “there” itself.

Structure: There + is/are/was/were/will be (+ not) (+ noun)
Examples: There is a bookstore on the corner. There are a lot of books in the library.
AffirmativeNegativeInterrogative
There is / areThere isn’t / aren’tIs / Are there…?
There was / wereThere wasn’t / weren’tWas / Were there…?
There will beThere won’t beWill there be…?
There has / have beenThere hasn’t / haven’t beenHas / Have there been…?
Some vs. Any:
We use some in affirmative sentences, and any in negative sentences and questions.
There are some letters in the box. → There aren’t any letters in the box. → Are there any letters in the box?
Exception: we use “some” in offers and requests, even in questions: Would you like some coffee?
Example 1: There isn’t a lot of milk. There aren’t many people.
Example 2: There was a car in front of the door. There weren’t many students in the museum.
Example 3: There will be a new school here. Will there be some juice?
Example 4: There have been a few clients. There hasn’t been water.
Quick trick
Look at the noun after “there + be”, not at “there” itself, to decide singular or plural.
There is a book. vs. There are books.
Remember: some → affirmative, any → negative and questions (except offers).
